EAC TR CU 012 – Ex-proof (EAC ATEX) Certification for Explosion Hazard Areas
Technical Regulation TR CU 012 of the Customs Union (now EAEU) – Safety of Equipment in Explosion Hazardous Zones
The Technical Regulation TR CU 012 “On the safety of equipment for operation in explosion hazard areas” was adopted by the Customs Union in 2011 and has been mandatory since 15 February 2013. Today, it continues to apply within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
The aim of TR CU 012 is to ensure that equipment and devices used in explosive gas or dust atmospheres do not present an ignition or explosion hazard. The so-called EAC ATEX Certification is a specific part of the general EAC Certification and is mandatory for placing Ex-proof equipment on the market and for its legal operation within the EAEU member states.
The regulation covers electrical equipment, Ex-components as well as non-electrical equipment intended for use in explosive zones. Certification can be carried out both for complex production facilities with numerous Ex-components and for individual elements of control and protection systems (e.g. signal lamps, limit switches), sensors, measuring instruments and many other devices.
An essential element is the Ex marking, which serves as the official identification mark for explosion-proof equipment. In addition, explosion protection devices provided by the manufacturer must be documented in the Technical File as required by TR CU 012.
Scope of the TR CU 012/2011 (Explosion Protection)
TR CU 012/2011 contains explosion-proof equipment, which is divided into the following classes:

TR CU 012 Technical File – Required Documentation
For approval of equipment under TR CU 012/2011 “On the Safety of Equipment for Use in Explosive Atmospheres”, the manufacturer is required to prepare comprehensive technical documentation (Technical File). This Technical File must include, among others:
- Name and/or designation of the equipment (type, brand, model) including safety-related parameters and characteristics;
- Intended purpose of the equipment;
- Instructions for installation, assembly, adjustment or regulation;
- Guidance on safe operation, including commissioning, intended use, maintenance, repairs, inspections, protective measures, as well as transport and storage conditions;
- Specified service life and/or resource;
- List of possible critical failures or operator errors leading to hazardous situations and preventive actions;
- Parameters of limiting operational states;
- Measures to be taken in case of equipment malfunction;
- Information on necessary supplementary components (e.g. cable glands);
- Requirements for maintaining technical characteristics ensuring explosion safety;
- Packaging, conservation, transport and storage requirements, including deadlines for re-inspections or replacement of parts;
- Requirements for equipment disposal;
- Storage, transport and disposal rules (if applicable);
- Qualification requirements for personnel;
- Manufacturer’s details (name, address, contact information);
- Authorized representative, importer or agent details (name, address, contact information);
- Date of manufacture.
The technical documentation must be prepared in paper form, and may additionally be provided in electronic format.
The Technical File is essential for confirming compliance under TR CU 012 and serves as the foundation for EAC Certification of equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres.
